About Malvern, PA

Malvern is a borough—or self-governing village—in Chester County, in southeast Pennsylvania. It is 1.2 square miles in size, and it had a population of 2,998 as of 2010. Malvern is served by the SEPTA R5 rail system, and it is located within easy access of U.S. Routes 30 and 202. It is located 25 miles to the west of the closest major urban center, Philadelphia. The area receives an estimated 46 inches of rain and 35 inches of snow a year.

The borough is known for its small-town atmosphere, and it retains much of the charm of the Victorian era. One of Malvern’s most popular sights is Historic Sugartown, a carefully preserved and restored village from the early 1800s, when the village first began to flourish. At the time, it was known as West Chester Intersection; the origins of its eventual name, Malvern, remain disputed.

Malvern is the home of the Wharton Esherick Museum, which honors the life and work of the great American sculptor. The area of modern-day Malvern was also the site of the 1777 Battle of Paoli, a strategically important engagement of the American Revolution.
